Chat rooms

Open, members-only and invite-only rooms, guests, invitations and the public room.

Chat belongs to organizations. Open an organization's console and choose Team Chat. Owners and admins can turn chat off for the whole organization, which hides it and keeps the history until it is turned back on.

Room types

Each room has an access mode.

  • Every organization member. All members of the organization can read and write.
  • Invite only. Only the people on the room's list, plus chat admins, can enter.
  • Open. Any registered user can join as a guest, or be invited. Open rooms are labelled as not private. An open room can never be end-to-end encrypted.

Open rooms exist only if the owner or an admin first allows registered users to join open rooms in the chat settings. Turning that setting off closes every open room and removes the guests.

Guests

A guest is a registered user who joined an open room of an organization they do not belong to. A guest sees only the open rooms they joined. They never see the member list or any other room. Guests can read, and can write only if a chat admin has turned on guests can speak for that room. Press Join on the organization's chat page to join, or Leave to go.

Invitations

A chat admin can invite a registered user to an invite-only or open room. The invitation shows up under Chat Invites in the member menu. Accept or decline it there.

The public room

An organization can make one open room publicly viewable. Anyone, even without an account, can then read it, but only read, at the organization's public chat page. Only one room per organization can be public, only owners and admins can set it, and it carries a warning that anyone on the internet can read it.

Everyday use

  • Create a room with New room in the Channels list, choose its access mode, and press Create room.
  • Press Room settings to change who can enter, rename it or archive it.
  • Press People to see who is in a room and to add or remove people.
  • Deafen a room to stop its unread counts for yourself. This only affects you.
  • Press the report link on a message to report it.

Messages are plain text. Chat can be end-to-end encrypted in rooms that are not open or public, if the organization has that feature. See the guide on encrypted chat.
